Hill Country Haiku

I’m sitting here holding a bar of soap in my hand just mesmerized by it.  As I turn it over in my hand or rotate it- it seems as if I’m looking at it for the first time all over again.  Each time I view it…it’s new.  And it’s beautiful.  And it makes a big grin spread across my face.  This is the real deal.  These soaps were made by a true artist.

These were sent to me from Margie Lemmons of Hill Country Haiku

Lone Star Limited – Demo soap from the Lone Star Gathering

She sent along two of the Wavy Gravy and Lone Star Limited.  So I’m going to pay those forward along with some other soaping goodies (a surprise)!  Visit her site, come back here, leave a comment and let me know which soap you liked the best (and why) from her beautiful lineup.  We’ll draw a winner on Mon, August  15.

Private Soap Session on Sunday

I had a private soap session with a soaping buddy, Jennifer.  She had taken my basic soapmaking class at Taylored Concepts.  We soaped for over 4 hours!  I think it was closer to 5.  We had a BLAST!  Here’s what we made…

First thing she wanted to learn how to do was a swirl.  I think she did pretty darn good!  You can see the different swirl patterns in the soap.  We went over how to get different swirl looks.

Then she wanted to learn how to do a layerd soap with a line in the middle.  We used Bramble Berry’s new neon colors.  The bottom is Fizzy Lemonade and the top is Fired Up Fuchsia.  We did a thin cocoa line in the middle between the layers and textured the top a bit with some glitter.

Next up was whipped soap.

We used Bramble Berry’s Vanilla Select to scent the bases so those should turn a dark brown.  We scented the purple cupcake tops with Bramble Berry’s Lilac and the yellow with Bramble Berry’s Sweet Meyer Lemon.  We used TKB’s pop colors (RIP) to get the bright purple and yellow.

All together.

We also made an emulsified sugar scrub which turned out fantastic.

We had a blast!  Here’s a picture of us which I made really bright.  We decided we didn’t look that great after 5 hours of soaping…but here we are!

I hope everyone else had a great weekend!

Have you tried the column swirl yet?

I’m really loving the column swirl design technique.  Read about it here.

Here’s my latest using Bramble Berry neons…

I’m sure there are some other column swirls out there.  Please list your link in the comments section!

Barbara K. just emailed me her pictures of her column swirl scented with Fruit Stripe Gum (her own blend).  WOW! I remember that gum…the colors perfectly match it!  Great job!

Just bragging on a student….

Shelly took the Intro to CP soap class and the Artisan Soap Design classes that I teach at Taylored Concepts.  When she came into the class she hadn’t made any CP soap yet.

Here are her soaps from the Artisan Soap Design class:

Funnel Swirl

Slab Swirl

Layers with Embeds

And this is her first soap she made at home on her own.

Shelly's first solo soap! Great layers!

Great job, Shelly!  Keep at it cause you’re on a roll!

The Column Swirl

Soapylove, Debbie Chialtas, posted a really cool video on her Facebook pageCheck it out.  They of course are using paint…but I see soap!  I had to give it a try!  So here it is…

Recipe (so I remember):  12 oz coconut, 8 oz olive, 7 oz palm, 2 oz jojoba, 1 oz castor

Doh!  I kind of ruined it with a skewer.  Now it looks like a regular funnel swirl.  Lol.  I guess I was just worried that when you break it down into individual bars that there wouldn’t be enough interest in each bar.

A very cool effect! I’m going to play with it some more.

Thanks, Debbie!

Awesome Weekend!

Whew! I had a busy weekend. It was a beautiful weekend…Spring was in the air!  The dogs enjoyed being outside…there was plenty of frolicking, wrestling and stick chewing…

The Japanese maples are budding and growing beautiful leaves!

I made a couple of batches of soap.  Once castile…

And one swirled…

I recieved a shipment of beautiful papers for an upcoming project…

On Sunday we grilled fajitas with family over!  It was a wonderful weekend!  I hope you had one as well.
